SUNDERLAND’S friendly match against Rangers was abandoned after just 45 minutes of action in Portugal due to a floodlight failure.
The Black Cats led the Europa League champions through Luke O’Nien’s strike at the break but a power failure at the Estadio Municipal de Albufeira stopped the second half from getting underway.
As the night drew in, the failure within the stadium led to the decision to abandon the game after just one half of football.
Dan Ballard started for Sunderland for the first time while latest permanent signing Jack Clarke watched on from the stands. Clarke flew out to the pre-season training camp after he completed his switch from Tottenham Hotspur.
Sunderland’s next friendly will be against Jose Mourinho’s Roma on Wednesday evening, the night before they return to home soil to continue their pre-season preparations.
