SVEN Botman's long awaited move to Newcastle United has officially been completed as the Dutch defender described his unveiling as the 'best day' of his life.
Botman's deal was agreed in principle this week after the Magpies fought off competition from a host of clubs to bring him to St James Park from Lille for a financial package in the region of around £39 million.
After weeks of negotiations since the season ended and competition from other European sides, Botman rubber stamped his move on the day the first-team returned to the club's training ground for pre-season training. "I'm really happy - delighted - and I can't wait to start this new adventure" he said.
"This is the best day of my life, to sign a contract with Newcastle United. It's a day I've worked hard for and I'm very excited.
"Newcastle had a long-term plan to get to the top, for both me and for the club, and they play in the Premier League which is the best league in Europe. The whole package is just perfect. I'm looking forward now to meeting the fans and also my new team-mates."
Botman becomes Newcastle United's third signing of the summer following the arrival of left-back Matt Targett and goalkeeper Nick Pope.
The 22-year-old arrives with plenty of pedigree in his short career have won the Ligue 1 title with Lille and played in the Champions League. The club are planning on to work on his continuing development as they look to mould him into one of the best centre backs in world football.
Head coach Eddie Howe said: "He is technically very good, physically very good and has a great attitude.
"At 22, he already has solid experience at the top level but he is at a great age to grow with this team. I am looking forward to getting to work with him and seeing him with his new team-mates."
