How did the players fare in Sunderland's 5-1 win over Cambridge?
SUNDERLAND (3-5-2):
6 Patterson: Will not have many quieter games in a Sunderland shirt – didn’t have a chance with Cambridge’s goal
7 Wright: Barely had to break sweat as he coasted through most of the afternoon – won pretty much all of his challenges
7 Batth: Wasn’t extended defensively on his return to the side and claimed his first Sunderland goal with a close-range header
5 Winchester: Only lasted ten minutes before a hamstring injury forced him to hobble from the field in obvious discomfort
9 GOOCH: Ran riot down the right-hand side all afternoon – ended with two assists, but could easily have had more
7 O’Nien: Got into some excellent positions in the 18-yard box, and should have scored with a header that was saved
6 Evans: Controlled things neatly at the base of midfield, although the early sending off meant he was never really stretched
8 Embleton: Played slightly deeper than usual, and was able to control things as a result – perhaps his goal was slightly fortuitous
8 Roberts: Created a lot of problems down the left and delivered some excellent balls into the penalty area
8 Broadhead: Went close on a number of occasions in the first half, and deservedly scored when he headed home Gooch’s cross in the second
8 Stewart: Ended his eight-game goal drought by claiming a brace – dominated the Cambridge defence in the air
Subs:
7 Doyle (for Winchester, 10): Looked extremely comfortable breaking forward down the left
7 Pritchard (for Broadhead, 59): Made a welcome return from injury in the final half-hour
6 Neil (for Evans, 66): Kept Sunderland on the front foot in the closing stages
(not used): Hoffmann (gk), Hume, Matete, Clarke.
CAMBRIDGE (4-5-1):
Mitov 5; Williams 4, Okedina 4, Jones 3, Iredale 3; Smith 4 (Bennett 46, 4), May 4, Knibbs 4 (O’Neil 63, 4), DIGBY 5, Brophy 3; Ironside 4.
Subs (not used): Mannion (gk), Hoolahan, Tracey, Lankester, Worman.
Man Of The Match: LYNDEN GOOCH – The Sunderland winger caused problems whenever he burst forward down the right flank.
