How did the players fare in Sunderland's 3-2 win over Shrewsbury?
SUNDERLAND (3-5-2):
6 Patterson: Wasn’t able to keep out Flanagan’s strike but made a couple of important catches from crosses
6 Winchester: Used the ball effectively in the first half, but was caught on a couple of occasions when Shrewsbury broke after the break
6 Wright: Won most of his battles, although found himself stretched on occasion in the second half
8 Cirkin: Caused all sorts of problems when he strode out of defence – clearly relishes the freedom afforded by a back three
6 Gooch: Had a mixed afternoon down the right – came close with a curled strike that drifted just past the post
7 Matete: Bossed the game for much of the first half, and while he wasn’t quite as effective in the second period, he remains a key asset
6 O’Nien: Played in a more advanced role than usual – let himself down when he dived to try to win a late penalty
6 Embleton: Started extremely brightly and scored with a wonderful first-time strike – but was fading by the time he was replaced in the second half
7 Clarke: His delivery wasn’t always perfect, but he was a major influence down the left and swung over the cross for the winner
8 BROADHEAD: Has developed a happy knack of scoring in stoppage time – took both of his goals extremely well
6 Stewart: Still can’t break his scoring duck, although he won’t much closer than the shot that rattled the crossbar
Subs:
6 Evans (for Embleton, 61): Helped shore things up at a time when Sunderland were in danger of dropping out of the game
Roberts (for Gooch, 78)
Neil (for Matete, 86)
(not used): Burge (gk), Batth, Xhemajli, Hume.
SHREWSBURY (5-3-2):
Marosi 6; Bennett 4 (Daniels 37, 5), Pennington 5, Flanagan 6, Leahy 6, NURSE 7; Vela 6, Fornah 5, Whalley 6 (Bloxham 88); Udoh 5 (Pierre 78), Bowman 6.
Subs: Burgoyne (gk), Caton, Craig, Janneh.
Man Of The Match: NATHAN BROADHEAD – The Everton loanee has scored nine goals in his last ten matches, and is in great goalscoring form.
