Sunderland are set to agree a deal that would confirm a sensational return for former Striker Jermain Defoe.
The 39-year-old looks set to complete a remarkable return to the Stadium of Light with club officials increasingly confident a deal can be agreed before the transfer deadline later today.
Defoe was released by Rangers earlier this month and it is anticipated he will return to Wearside in a player-coach role.
The Black Cats have held a series of talks over Defoe’s return but were previously stalled as former head coach Lee Johnson had reservations over his ability to make an impact having played just nine minutes of senior football this season.
However, Johnson’s dismissal following Saturday’s 6-0 defeat at Bolton has opened the door for a deal to be completed.

Really want the Jermain Defoe signing rumours to be true but it's definitely not there yet and won't be until it is confirmed by the club in my eyes. Protecting myself against heartbreak. #SAFC

As a free agent, Defoe does not necessarily have to sign for a new employer during the transfer window, and could in theory leave a decision over his future until later in the week.
Sunderland are keen to settle things as quickly as possible, with the visit of Doncaster looming large on Saturday.
