SEDGEFIELD'S Jack Smith was part of the GB wheelchair rugby squad that won a historic first Paralympic medal in the sport as they beat three-time champions the United States 54-49 in the final.
Smith, who suffered a broken neck during a rugby game while playing for Billingham's youth team, took up wheelchair rugby after recovering from his injury.
He has developed into one of the leading players in the country, representing top club side Leicester Tigers, and was a key part of the GB squad that triumphed in Tokyo.
Spearheaded by 24 tries from Jim Roberts, Paralympics GB edged out the US in the final, having led at the end of each quarter.
Jointly captained by Chris Ryan and Gavin Walker, GB had guaranteed a place on the podium yesterday courtesy of a 55-49 win over hosts Japan.
Top-scorer Roberts has consistently performed at the Yoyogi National Stadium over the five days of the tournament, and once again led the way in today’s showpiece.
