SPENNYMOOR were beaten by two goals inside a minute to end their unbeaten start to the season in National League North.
Moors couldn’t take their chances in a 2-1 defeat to Leamington, who were playing their first league game of the season following a Covid outbreak which forced the postponement of their first two matches.
Manager Tommy Miller, who suffered his first league defeat since taking charge last season, said; “We can’t concede goals like we did and expect to get something out of the game.
“The start of the second half was poor, the two goals were identical. I thought that we should have got something from the game, because we had plenty of chances, but didn’t take them."
Moors nearly took an early lead, but midfielder Rob Ramshaw was denied by a good save from Leamington keeper Jake Weaver, then they had a penalty claim turned down for a foul on Stephen Thompson.
However, Moors keeper Dale Eve pulled off two good saves from Kelsey Mooney before half-time.
At the start of the second half, Joe Tait put a good close-range chance over the bar, but then Leamington took control of the game.
Jack Edwards had a shot cleared off the line by Tait, but Dan Turner was there to turn the ball home.
And a minute later, it was 2-0 when Mooney crossed for Edwards to head past Eve.
The goal sparked Moors into life. They were awarded a penalty for a foul on Ramshaw, but Weaver saved Glen Taylor’s spot kick.
The keeper pulled off two more good saves to deny a header by Ramshaw and a low shot by Jamie Chandler, but had no chance when sub Frank Mulhern crossed for Ramshaw to head home.
Moors will be hoping to bounce back when York City visit the Brewery Field this afternoon. York have had a bad start to the season, losing all three of their games.
In the Northern Premier League East, Shildon maintained their 100 per cent start when they scored another last-minute winner at Cleethorpes.
Stockton, meanwhile, were beaten by a first-half goal at home to Worksop – their first defeat in a league game since April 2019.
Shildon take on Stockton this afternoon.
