LYNDON LONGHORNE has smashed the British record for the S4 100m freestyle - and finished seventh in his first Paralympic final in Tokyo.
The County Durham swimmer lowered the previous British record by more than three seconds as he posted a time of 1:34.27 in the heats to qualify for his first Paralympic final.
He then went even better in the final itself, lowering his time to 1:33.30 as he finished in seventh position.
Japan's Takayuki Suzuki claimed the gold medal, with Italy's Luigi Beggiato winning silver.
Longhorne, who is a former winner of The Northern Echo's Local Heroes awards, is back in action later this morning competing as part of the British team in the final of the mixed 4x50m freestyle relay.
