How did the players fare in England's Riverside win over Romania?
ENGLAND (4-2-3-1):
8 Johnstone: Could not have wished for a better international debut – made an excellent second-half save to deny Ivan
7 Godfrey: Proved his versatility by playing at right-back and tried to get forward when the opportunity allowed
6 White: Didn’t look out of place on his first international start and still has an outside chance of making the squad
5 Mings: Started shakily and never really recovered his composure – could be a weak link if he has to stand in for Maguire
6 Shaw: Is battling with Chilwell for a starting spot at left-back and was steady without doing anything too special
6 Phillips: Kept the ball moving before he was replaced at the break, although the majority of his passes were safe rather than spectacular
8 WARD-PROWSE: Produced two of England’s best moments with excellent set-pieces that were met by Calvert-Lewin inside the area
6 Sancho: Didn’t see as much of the ball as he would have liked, but rattled the crossbar with a smart strike in the first half
7 Grealish: Provided some stand-out moments with his dribbling and won the penalty that was converted by Rashford
7 Rashford: Wasn’t at his best for some of the game, but held his nerve to score from the spot and is likely to be a big player under Southgate
7 Calvert-Lewin: Rattled the crossbar with a superb first-half header and drew the foul that led to the penalty Henderson missed
Subs:
5 J Henderson (for Phillips, 46): Proved his fitness by coming through the second half, but struck a poor penalty that was saved
5 Rice (for Ward-Prowse, 65): Didn’t really have to get out of first gear as he eased his way through the final half-hour or so
6 Bellingham (for Sancho, 65): Proved a lively presence in the closing stages and came close with a late header that was saved
Lingard (for Rashford, 75)
Trippier (for Shaw, 75)
Watkins (for Calvert-Lewin, 82)
(not used): Pickford (gk), Ramsdale (gk), D Henderson (gk), Coady, Kane.
ROMANIA (4-3-3):
Nita 7; CRISTIAN 7 (Capusa 66, 5), Nedelcearu 6 (Rus 83), Chiriches 4, Camora 5; Stanciu 5, Marin 6, Cicaldau 5 (Budescu 79); Ivan 6, Alibec 5 (Hagi 66, 4), Paun 5 (Baluta 79).
Subs (not used): Vlad (gk), Iacob (gk), Ganea, Maxim, Morutan, Olaru.
Man Of The Match: JAMES WARD-PROWSE – The quality of set-pieces must give him a good chance of being the player selected to replace Alexander-Arnold.
