WEARSIDE duo Jordan Pickford and Jordan Henderson have been named in Gareth Southgate's provisional squad for this summer's European Championships.

Southgate has named an initial group of 33 players today, but will have to trim his squad down to a final list of 26 by June 1.

Pickford is expected to start as England's first-choice goalkeeper for the tournament, which will see Southgate's side play all of their group games at Wembley.

Henderson is named in the squad even though he has been struggling with injury with his club side Liverpool.

York-born Ben Godfrey is a surprise inclusion in the provisional squad, although the Everton defender is not expected to make the final group of 26.

He could feature in England's opening warm-up game against Austria at Middlesbrough's Riverside Stadium next week though, with a number of Southgate's first-choice defenders set to be unavailable for that game because they are representing either Manchester City or Chelsea in the Champions League final.

Godfrey is one of four uncapped players selected in the squad, alongside Brighton centre-half Ben White, Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale and West Brom shot-stopper Sam Johnstone. Long-time number two goalkeeper Nick Pope misses out through injury.

Manchester United teenager Mason Greenwood has been recalled for the first time since being sent home after his debut in Iceland.

Eric Dier misses out, but Trent Alexander-Arnold returns to the group alongside fellow right-backs Reece James, Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker.

Bukayo Saka, Ollie Watkins and 17-year-old Jude Bellingham are among the others to get the nod.
