REIGNING MSA Junior Rallycross champion Tom Constantine was in action in rounds three and four of the Toyo Tires MSA British Rallycross Championship at Pembrey in South Wales where he endured mixed fortunes over the two days’ racing.
The 18-year-old rising star from Richmond was again contesting the prestigious Swift Sport Championship within the BRX series and following his fantastic runner-up spot in round one at Silverstone, was hoping to make up for the disappointment of not making the final at round two at Lydden Hill two months’ ago.
Constantine’s weekend got off to a great start with a win and a second place in the heats before finishing runner-up in the final to ensure a decent points haul in round three, to repeat the opening-round heroics that had got his championship challenge off to such a strong start.
Round four, however, wasn’t quite as successful due to the inclement weather and the different track configuration but Constantine still managed to claim fifth place in the final to score important points to keep his championship challenge on track.
There was success for a number of other local drivers who made the long trip south to Pembrey including Northallerton’s Drew Bellerby, who won the BMW Mini final on day two after Ferryhill driver David Bell had achieved an identical success on the opening day of racing.
Siblings played a part in the story of the various race classes as Drew’s elder sister, Paige, came back from a big crash on day one to claim second place in the SuperModified class on the second day of competition in her Lotus Exige.
Tom’s younger brother, Luke, claimed second in the Junior Swift class, with the pair’s cousin, James Constantine, from Dalton-on-Tees, finishing in fourth on both days.
Northallerton’s Ben Sayer claimed fifth spot on both days in the Junior Swift class whilst Stockton brothers, Martin and Ashley Hawkes, had best results of fourth and fifth respectively in the BMW Mini class.
The next round of the series takes place on August Bank Holiday Monday at Lydden Hill in Kent, and should once again feature a healthy start list of drivers from our region.
