DANNY Wilson last night gave Hull City defender Danny Coles the chance to earn a permanent move to Hartlepool United.

The central defender has moved on loan with a view to a full-time deal after finding chances limited on Humberside following a £200,000 transfer in 2005.

Bristol-born Coles could be handed a swift debut for Pools tonight, as they meet Carlisle at Victoria Park desperate to put behind them Saturday's poor performance and defeat to Walsall, who were also keen on Coles' services.

Wilson managed Coles at Bristol City and he played against Pools in both legs of the 2004 play-off semi-finals.

This season he has made just one appearance for the Tigers and boss Phil Brown admitted: "We had a discussion about his future because his opportunities have been few and far between.

"He's conducted himself in the right manner and consequently we've allowed this loan deal to go ahead. He'll be trying to secure himself a new club up there.'' Pools keeper Jan Budtz was the pick of the home performers on Saturday.

He was beaten by Paul Hall's late strike, but admitted: "I made a few good saves and I am confident at the moment.

"Playing and getting games under my belt is giving me that confidence so I just hope it continues."

"We have to prove something to ourselves, the club and the fans now and I don't think we will do the same thing again on Tuesday.

I don't think we can play so badly again. It was the worst game I have witnessed at Hartlepool since I came here.

"It can only get better and it's a good thing that the next game comes so quickly.'' Budtz, who last week became a father for the second time when son Robbie was born, added: "The lads are not tired or anything.

I just think it is a mental thing and we weren't switched on."

"Overall we were poor - it was just a bad day at the office.

"The gaffer gave us a kick up the backside. He knew it wasn't good enough, we all did.

"We can't play so poorly two games in a row, the lads know that."

Wilson will hope to have striker Ian Moore back in action tonight. He was forced out of Saturday's defeat with a neck injury suffered in a minor car crash on Friday.

Carlisle are likely to stick with the same side which won at Bournemouth on Saturday and that will mean a place on the bench for former Pools defender Paul Arnison.
