Bishop Auckland played with ten men for more than half the game to earn a point in Brian Honour's first game back in charge.
Bishops had conceded 15 goals in their previous three games, but they overcame the dismissal of midfielder Joe Fairish to earn a point in a 1-1 draw against Jarrow Roofing.
Honour, appointed boss for the second time on Friday, said: "I couldn't criticise the heart, commitment and desire of the players for the way they battled.
"My work starts now, I've got to try and bring in players who can improve the squad and lift further up the table."
Bishops took the lead early on when Gavin Parkin lobbed the keeper from 20 yards, but then they had Fairish dismissed for retaliation. Roofing equalised with a 30 yard effort from Andrew Johnson.
Whitley Bay stay top after a 3-3 draw at Dunston, but led 3-1 with 20 minutes left. Paul Chow put Whitley ahead on 30 minutes, but Steve Preen equalised.
Brian Smith restored Whitley's lead on 41 minutes, and they went further ahead through Paul Robinson. But Steve Pickering pulled a goal back with a header, and in the last minute Preen equalised from the penalty spot.
Durham City preserved their unbeaten record with a 2-1 win at West Allotment. City trailed to a goal by Andy Hay, but Jimmy Farrell equalised with ten minutes left and Richardson headed the winner in the dying seconds.
Sunderland Nissan also scored a late winner to grab the points at Tow Law.
The home side took the lead early on when Mark Eccles burst down the left and beat Paul Newton in the Nissan goal, but Nissan equalised on 30 minutes when Steve Walklate opened the defence for Gavin Cogdon to net with a low shot.
A draw looked on the cards until the last minute when Cogdon raced clear, with the Lawyers defence claiming handball, to score his 11th league goal of the season.
Shildon moved out of the bottom six with a 1-0 victory at Northallerton, who had striker Paul Hinton sent off.
Tyson Masters and Adam Emson were both denied in the first half, and Shildon broke through after 79 minutes when Emson scored.
Chester-le-Street climbed out of the bottom three with a 1-0 win at Bedlington.
Scott Emmerson and Andy Cuthbertson had efforts cleared off the Bedlington line before Chester keeper Jos Carmichael stopped a penalty from Alex Benjamin.
Emmerson scored after 72 minutes when he hit the post, but followed up to score from the rebound.
Seaham Red Star are fifth after a 1-0 home win over bottom club Ashington.
Former Hartlepool player Steve Halliday beat two defenders and fired past the Ashington keeper for the only goal after 10 minutes.
Washington came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Morpeth. Damen Mullen and Lee Bell put Morpeth 2-0 up, but veteran striker John Milner hit back twice for Washington.
In the second division, Darlington RA bounced back after some poor results with a 4-1 victory at Esh Winning. The RA took the lead with a Neil Tarrant penalty, but Esh levelled through Ian Ward from a free-kick. Steven Bell crossed for Tarrant to head the RA back in front on the hour, then Paul Freary netted on 75 and 80 minutes.
Second division leaders Birtley lost their unbeaten record when they were beaten 2-1 at home by South Shields.
Birtley took the lead when Barrie Smith scored with a low shot and Shields equalised on 72 minutes with an effort by Mark Johnson on the turn.
Lee O'Donovan got the winner with a header from a Mark Feasey free-kick.
Guisborough moved second after beating Whickham 4-0 at the King George.
Craig Skelton scored from a rebound, and Glenn Wesson tapped in after Skelton's shot was blocked. After Whickham hit the bar, Paul Jack scored the third from a Skelton pass and Wesson wrapped up the scoring.
Sunderland RCA climbed out of the bottom three after coming from behind to beat Marske 3-2. Liam McPhillips gave Marske a half-time lead, but new signing Gary Shields equalised from the spot.
David Onions put Marske ahead with another penalty after missing one in the first half, but Simon Andrews levelled from close range after 55 minutes. But new signing Lee Bell struck the winner on 75 minutes.
Managerless Crook are now in the bottom two after a 4-1 defeat at Ryton. They were level at one point after Kristian Dinsley equalised, but Ryton outplayed them in the second half. Marc Walton, Dale Burrell, Carl Paterson and Stephen Shaw scored for Ryton.
Stokesley dropped to third after their first defeat in six games at Hebburn. They took the lead through Andy Fletcher early on, but Hebburn hit back to lead with two goals by Tony Hanson. Stokesley thought they had a point when John Newton scored, but Karl McMann scored a late winner for Hebburn.
Former Middlesbrough defender Dean Gordon scored as Thornaby beat Team Northumbria 4-3 at Teesdale Park.
Gordon scored a 35 yard cracker to help Thornaby into a 3-1 lead with Alan Cosavella and David Turner also scoring, but Turner was then red carded, and TN came back to level at 3-3, with Mark Young, who netted in the first half, and Rob Nolan scoring. John Ryan scored Thornaby's winner with two minutes left.
Norton have gone eight games without a win after they were beaten 3-2 at Penrith. Marcus Laing headed an equaliser at 1-1, but Nathan Mulligan's goal was just a late consolation.
Brandon are still bottom without a win after a 3-0 defeat at North Shields for whom Stuart Heppell (2) and Aaron Robertson scored.
In the UniBond League First Division, Newcastle Blue Star lost 2-1 at Mossley, Chris Emms scoring their goal.
