West Auckland manager David Bayles reckons his players finally "came good" as they became the only Arngrove Northern League team in this morning's draw after beating Newcastle Benfield 1-0 on Saturday.

West battled through the last half hour of the match with ten men after striker Jonathan Milroy was shown a second yellow card, and Bayles said: "The players can hold their heads up high because they came good and got what they deserved.

"We lost badly against Benfield on the first day of the season, and I told the players to put a few things right on Saturday and they did.

"They showed plenty of battling spirit when we had a man sent off, and didn't allow Benfield any chances."

The game was fairly even in the first hour with neither keeper troubled, but on the hour Milroy was shown his second yellow card for a foul.

They took the lead on 69 minutes when Scott Nicholson headed in a free-kick from Brian Fairhurst, and held on for a place in this morning's third qualifying round draw.

Spennymoor manager Jason Ainsley apologised to the fans after their 8-2 thrashing at UniBond League strugglers Clitheroe.

"It was embarrassing. We folded like a pack of cards in the second half. I felt sorry for our fans who had made the journey to see a second half performance like that."

Such a rout didn't seem on the cards when Karl Richards made the score 1-1 with a 30 yarder just a minute before half-time.

Clitheroe, who haven't won a league game yet this season in the first division north, scored just on half-time, and then rattled in another four in the space of a few minutes at the start of the second half, although Adam Johnston hit the bar for Moors at 3-1.

Chris Lowther pulled one back at 6-1.

Only one other North-East club reached the next round, Blyth Spartans who beat Radcliffe Borough 2-1 at Croft Park thanks to a last minute winner from Chris McCabe. Richard Forster earlier put Blyth ahead from the spot.

Consett almost forced a replay against Blue Square North club Workington, but conceded two goals in the last five minutes.

Consett played some good football and Gary Ormston went close twice, but Workington took the lead after 87 minutes through Kyle May and broke away for a second through Johnny Wright.

Horden had a bad start at home to Woodley Sports, conceding two goals in the first ten minutes. Horden striker Roy Allen hit the bar and also missed with the keeper to beat, but the UniBond League side won 5-0.

Billingham Town were outclassed by UniBond League Fleetwood, going down 4-0.

Gateshead, previously unbeaten in all competitions, surprisingly lost 3-1 at home to Vauxhall Motors. Keeper Peter Keen was red carded for handling outside his box when the scores were goalless.

Whitby lost 4-0 at Bradford Park Avenue, a division below them in the UniBond League and had Matty Appleby was sent off.
