OUT-OF-SORTS Yorkshire closed the first day of their final Championship match of the season against Hampshire at Headingley Carnegie on 161 for seven in 52.3 overs after rain had caused five interruptions.

There was an upset for Yorkshire before the start when Anthony McGrath had to withdraw from the side because of a calf strain, the injury causing him to miss out on the chance to score 69 to complete 1,000 first-class runs for the third consecutive season.

Joe Sayers took over from Mc- Grath and opened the innings with Andrew Gale, who fell to the second ball of the match when he edged James Bruce to wicketkeeper Nic Pothas.

Sayers had to wait until his 14th ball before getting off the mark by striking Sean Ervine to the boundary, but soon afterwards the same bowler had him well caught low to his left at second slip by Shane Warne.

Michael Vaughan and Inzamam- ul-Hak staged something of a recovery until shortly before the first break for drizzle, when Vaughan edged promising young seamer David Balcombe into his middle stump for 26 and Yorkshire were 45 for three.

Only a further five deliveries were possible on the re-start before another break for rain but there was still sufficient time for Jacques Rudolph to give Ervine a second wicket as Warne again made no mistake in the slips.

Inzamam, partnered by Gerard Brophy, took Yorkshire to lunch on 73 for four, the former Pakistan captain having reached 23 to register his best Championship score in four innings since joining the Tykes.

The fifth-wicket pair were still together half-an-hour after lunch when there was a third stoppage for light rain, either side of which Inzamam began to find his touch with some confident strokes, while Brophy also settled in nicely with consecutive boundaries either side of the wicket against Ervine.

Inzamam played a classic backfoot cover drive to go to his halfcentury off 82 deliveries with nine fours but Bruce's next ball scuttled through and Inzamam was lbw through no fault of his own, his stand with Brophy being worth 76 from 19 overs.

A fourth break for rain at 132 for five brought forward the tea interval, after which Brophy and Adil Rashid moved the score on to 150 before Brophy pushed forward at Balcombe and was easily caught at first slip by his former Yorkshire team-mate, Michael Lumb, for 42.

Rashid departed in the following over from Bruce when he played a ball into his stumps and Tim Bresnan and Darren Gough were only together a few overs before further rain ended play for the day.
