Spennymoor manager Jason Ainsley praised his players' fighting spirit and determination after they outplayed UniBond outfit Brigg Town by 2-1 at the Brewery Field on Saturday.

Brigg, managed by former Darlington midfielder Dave McLean, became the second UniBond team to be defeated by underdogs Moors in the competition this season, and Ainsley said: "Maybe we didn't play as well as we have done in recent games in the league, but I have to praise the players for the way they approached the game.

"They worked really hard, and showed plenty of spirit and determination. Brigg didn't have many shots on goal at all, while we could have scored more. We don't mind who we play in the next round now."

Moors had all of the play early on, and took the lead after 16 minutes when David Manson chested the ball down for Adam Johnston to score with a left foot shot. Manson, Karl Richards and Adam Clough all missed good chances before Moors got their second on 75 minutes, when Johnston sent Manson racing clear to fire home. Daniel Barrett pulled a goal back for Brigg deep into stoppage time.

West Auckland produced one of their best displays of the season to beat Winterton Rangers 3-2 at Darlington Road.

They took the lead on 41 minutes when Lee Ellison picked up a long ball from Michael Heckley and fired home, but Winterton equalised when West keeper Mark Bell miskicked, and Gary Clarke chipped the ball past him.

Danny Richmond then put West back into the lead on 47 minutes when he beat two defenders and blasted the ball in, then Jonathan Milroy got the third from a quickly taken free kick by Brian Fairhurst. Winterton pulled a goal back to set up a nervous finish.

Newcastle Benfield have also beaten two UniBond clubs, this time they beat neighbours Newcastle Blue Star 2-1.

Blue Star took the lead when Lee Novak scored, but then they had Leon Scott red carded for a foul. Benfield had a much better second half, and they equalised when Anthony Shandran scored with a looping header from Dean Fuller's free-kick. They got the winner when Mark Atkinson's corner bounced off a defender and into the net.

Consett gained revenge for their cup exit two years ago at the hands of UniBond League Ossett Town by beating the same opponents 3-0. Consett outplayed their visitors, and took the lead from a twice taken Mattie Moffat penalty after Steven Brown had been brought down.

Consett increased their lead in thr 61st minute through John Clark. Moffat added a third shortly after.

Shildon's run ended when they lost an entertaining game by 3-2 at Whitby Town.

Tony Hackworth put Whitby into the lead on 11 minutes, but good play by Stuart Niven allowed Adam Emson to equalise. Brunskill restored Whitby's lead just before half-time from a corner, and then Shildon missed three great chances to equalise before Emson ran on to another Niven pass and beat the Whitby keeper. But in the dying seconds, Brunskill broke Shildon's hearts when he scored from a few yards.

Durham City are also out, beaten 3-1 at home by UniBond title chasers Guiseley.

The Yorkshire side were given a hotly disputed penalty after three minutes, converted by Dominic Krief who then set up a goal for Leon Henry.

Durham missed some good chances to get back into the game, and Guiseley made them pay when Krief scored another. Durham pulled a goal back late in the game when Steve Richardson's shot was parried for Stephen Harrison to turn in.

Billingham Town won 3-2 at Hall Road Rangers.

The Northern Counties East League side took an early lead, but Jamie Magowan headed the equaliser from Anthony Chapman's cross. Magowan was in the right place to put his side in front following a good run by Nathan Jameson, and Steve Flockett got another after a shot by Steve Huggins was blocked. Hall Road pulled a late goal back.

Chester-le-Street overcame a controversial early penalty award to draw 1-1 with UniBond club Harrogate RA, and must replay on Wednesday night. Chester had two players booked for protesting at the award, which Steve Olekswewycz converted.

But Chester recovered well, and Jonny Wightman struck a good equaliser before half-time, and Wightman nearly got the winner in the second half with an overhead kick.

Horden and Jarrow Roofing must also try again after they drew 1-1 at Welfare Park.

Horden took the lead in the first minute through Mark Stephenson from a Darren Atkinson free kick. But Roofing hit back with a deserved equaliser with a few minutes left through Andrew Johnson.

Gateshead cruised through to the next round with an easy 6-1 home win over Selby Town. David Southern (2), Graeme Armstrong, Craig Baxter, Ian Robson and Steve Bowey scored. Gateshead have won every game they've played this season in league and cup, seven in total.

Penrith are still in the competition, after a last minute goal by David Edmondson gave them a 2-2 draw at Dinnington.

The draw for the second qualifying round is made at lunchtime today.
