Sunderland defender Danny Collins' Wales career has been thrown into serious doubt for the second time after he clearly upset John Toshack with a late squad withdrawal.
Collins, 27, has only got himself back into Toshack's good books this season following an embarrassing bust-up 18 months ago when he was involved in a hotel row with his international boss.
He had complained then about being overlooked for a substitute's appearance in the friendly with Paraguay in March 2006.
Toshack had opted for teenager Lewin Nyatanga in his place, and Toshack and Collins exchanged heated words in the hotel foyer.
Now, after recently apologising to Toshack and asking for a second chance, Collins has pulled out of the squad to face Germany on Saturday and Slovakia the following Wednesday in Euro 2008 qualifiers.
Collins, who played the full 90 minutes on Saturday at Manchester United, has now contacted Toshack and asked not to be considered due to an ankle problem.
But Toshack, having spoken to the full-back on the phone, is far from impressed with the Chester-born player.
Toshack said: ''Danny has said that he would rather get his ankle right these next two weeks rather than come with us, because he is concerned about his Sunderland place.
''He has lost his place once at Sunderland this season and has just got back into the side.
''I am disappointed and I do not know yet whether this will affect his international future.''
Toshack is clearly not impressed by Collins' request, adding: ''He asked not to be considered for these two games.
''Maybe he has looked around and seen that he won't be getting much of a game with the options we have on the left of defence.
''If players these days feel they are not going to be involved they sometimes seem reluctant to spend 10 days with the squad.
''He says he is concerned with keeping his Sunderland place, but we can't just have people hopping in and out of the squad when it suits them.
''We are trying, though, to bring in a lot of new players and maybe he has seen that Joe Ledley and Gareth Bale are likely to start on the left-hand side.''
Wales also feel there could be pressure from Sunderland on Collins, but Toshack said: ''You will have to ask the boy and the club about that.''
He added: ''I once recall Liverpool telling me that I would not be playing on Saturday if I went away and played for Wales. I decided to go, played for my country, and I was left out for Liverpool the following weekend.
''But players are different these days. Sometimes if they think they will not be playing, they don't really want to be spending ten days away from home.''
