Chelsea 1, Portsmouth 0.
Jose Mourinho watched Chelsea move to the top of the Premier League with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Portsmouth but he was still not satisfied.
Mourinho promised fans a new-look Chelsea this season - a side brimming with the same kind of attacking flair that swept Manchester United to the title last season.
And his desire to give fans the same kind of attacking verve United displayed had been all too evident prior to the visit of Harry Redknapp's Portsmouth.
An exciting 3-2 victory over Birmingham on the opening day was followed by a 2-1 away success at Reading, but last week's 1-1 draw with Rafa Benitez's Liverpool bore all the hallmarks of last season's Chelsea - a team of little flair but with plenty of grit and determination.
However, Mourinho had his reasons for Chelsea's lack of initiative against Pompey.
Mourinho declared: ''We played well against Manchester United in the Community Shield when we were without a lot of players and it was an exciting win against Birmingham.
''Then we turned the game around at Reading and played some exciting second-half football. At Liverpool we showed that we can still fight for the result and get a good point.
''But I don't like to play after national games in midweek. I cannot train with the team or prepare it. The concentration is not the same and the way we prepare is not the same.
''It happens like this on four out of five international weeks. But at the same time Portsmouth are a good team who are well organised with good players and manager.
''They made it difficult for us but the weather was not a help. It was very hot and I could see in the first half it was very difficult for the players to play intense football.
''There was no pressure on the ball and people were thinking and walking slowly on the pitch.
''I had to shake them at half-time to improve in the second half. We are top of the league. But I want to play better.''
Mourinho introduced new signing Juliano Belletti from Barcelona as a second-half substitute and that allowed Michael Essien to move back into his usual midfield role.
Essien who has been forced to play at right-back in recent games welcomed Belletti's arrival as it will help him to return to his regular midfield berth.
Essien said: ''I think I adapted a lot last season. I realised I had to get my shots on target. At first I was looking like I was killing someone in the stand.
''I'm not a great goalscorer. When I score, I'm happy, obviously, but the most important thing is for the team to win. I don't think about becoming a better goalscorer.
''I think about the team, working really hard for each other. That's me, I don't mind if I don't score goals."
