Newcastle Falcons lifted their first silverware of the season at Twickenham on Saturday, as they claimed the Middlesex Sevens title for the first time.
Coach Mark Laycock's outfit BEAT Worcester side 20-19 in a pulsating final, thanks to a brace of tries from Dutch wing Tim Visser and one each from captain Ollie Phillips and hooker Ross Batty.
Newcastle reached the showpiece final by virtue of a 26-5 drubbing of much-fancied Gloucester in the semis, two tries from skipper Phillips being added to by the creative Luke Fielden and scrum half Lee Dickson.
Arguably the toughest of the Falcons' five matches on the day came in the quarter final stages as Leicester Tigers were narrowly defeated 22-17.
The opener against Quins saw a stylish 40-7 win, the biggest of the first round, as Phillips crossed twice, while Paddy Dias, Micky Young and a late Fielden brace put the gloss on a superb performance which set the tone for the day.
The second and last group match saw Sale Sharks thumped 36-5 drubbing courtesy of tro tries from Dickson and one each for Visser, Fielden, Phillips and Adam Dehaty.
