DURHAM won their maiden first-class trophy this afternoon when they wrapped up a comprehensive 125-run victory over Hampshire in the Friends Provident Trophy final at Lord's.

The North-Easterners needed just 51 balls to claim Hampshire's five remaining wickets after rain had temporarily halted their victory charge on Saturday night.

Paul Collingwood cemented Durham's advantage when he removed Nic Pothas for 47 - the Hampshire wicketkeeper holed out to Graham Onions at deep square leg - and wickets continued to tumble at a regular rate from then.

Liam Plunkett removed Dimitri Mascarenhas (12) and Daren Powell (1), with those wickets sandwiching Collingwood's dismissal of Chris Tremlett (0).

That left Shane Warne and James Bruce needing to produce a miracle as Hampshire's final pair, and Durham's victory was confirmed when Plunkett cleaned bowled the former.

Dale Benkenstein became the first Durham skipper to lift a first-class trophy above his head, and Ottis Gibson was deservedly named man-of-the match after claiming the first three Hampshire wickets to fall on Saturday.
