David Barron feared he had ''blown it'' after Flipando had been successful at Beverley last week, but he coaxed enough improvement out of him to defy a penalty in the £50,000 totesport.com Zetland Gold Cup at Redcar.
The 10-furlong handicap was run at a steady pace and resulted in a sprint finish, with plenty still in with chances as they entered the final quarter-mile.
And with several rivals having trouble getting a clear run, Flipando (14-1), carrying the colours of Jean Hazell, had plenty of daylight on the outside.
Striking the front a furlong out, he kept on well for Paul Fessey to hold the challenge of Wind Star by a neck, with Bailieborough a head away in third. Blue Spinnaker, winner of the race three years ago, was just a neck further away in fourth.
The favourite Hassaad had a terrible run up the straight and did well to finish sixth.
Barron had sensed the Zetland could be just the race for Flipando after he had run well at York.
''He was rated 88 and I was worried that he might not get in so I decided to go to Beverley for an £8,000 race and pick up some easier money,'' he said.
''When he won I thought we had blown it for the Zetland as he picked up a 6lb penalty, but he is in tremendous form and he has come and done it so we have ended up with both prizes.
''I am not sure what we will do now, but I should think races like the John Smith's Cup at York would be possibilities.''
Fessey added: ''He is a big strong horse, he is like something out of Jurassic Park!''
Wigram's Turn's chances did not appear at all bright after a furlong or so in the Savills In Yorkshire Novice Auction Stakes but in the end he ran out a convincing winner.
The Andrew Balding-trained youngster was making his racecourse debut and showed his inexperience in the early stages.
But he gradually got the hang of things and, quickening up in good style for Franny Norton, the 7-1 chance swept to the front inside the final furlong and strode away to beat Select Committee by four lengths.
Sam's Secret (5-2 favourite) does not look the easiest of rides but Dean McKeown knows how to get the best out of her and that was good enough to bring success in the Market Cross Jewellers Selling Stakes
McKeown got her settled in the early stages and delivered his challenge inside the final quarter mile to beat Irish raider Yo Pedro by a length.
Australian ace Kerrin McEvoy was out of luck with Dan Dare in the feature race but has a good record at the course and duly struck with Sir Michael Stoute's Lacework in the totesport 0800 221 221 Handicap.
Lacework started the 5-4 favourite and she gave her supporters a fright as she did not look at all happy when McEvoy first asked her for an effort about three furlongs out.
But he persevered and she finally found her stride, quickening up to lead inside the final furlong and beat King Charles by a comfortable length.
Jedd O'Keeffe elected to go to Carlisle where the meeting was abandoned after two races and missed seeing 4-6 shot Bid For Gold landing the odds in the Journey South & Eton Road Median Auction Maiden Stakes by a length and a quarter from Sharpattack.
They all come alike to jockey PJ McDonald and having won the Scottish National on Hot Weld last month, he gave Mister Arjay (9-2) a splendid front-running ride to land the totecourse to course Handicap.
Winning trainer Brian Ellison said: ''Mister Arjay sulked because he could not get to the front at Beverley on Saturday, but PJ gave him a great ride today.''
Joe Fanning was another seen to good effect when Amanda Perrett's Color Man (4-1) made all to take the ''Come Racing At Redcar Tomorrow!'' Maiden Handicap.
The trainer's representative Kevin Clarke said: ''I know Color Man has had a lot of racing, but he is still a bit green really. Joe said he loved the ground and will get two miles.''
