SUNDERLAND returned to the top of the Barclays Under-21s Premier League table as they beat a Liverpool side featuring Belgium international Divock Origi this afternoon.

The Black Cats’ second string claimed a 53rd-minute lead when Mikael Mandron headed home Rees Greenwood’s deflected cross.

Greenwood had a curled effort ruled out for offside shortly after, and the winger was involved again as Sunderland doubled their advantage midway through the second half.

Carl Lawson was the beneficiary of the midfielder’s creative talents, and having received the ball, he fired a crisp finish past Liverpool goalkeeper Danny Ward.

With title rivals Manchester United having lost to Manchester City yesterday, Andy Welsh’s side top the table with six more games to play.

Sunderland: Talbot, E Robson, Brady, Beadling, J Robson, Agnew, Smith, Greenwood, Honeyman, Lawson, Mandron.
