Goals:
1-0: Boyd (34, hammered home from 20 yards after Ings headed Tripper’s long ball into his path)
1-1: Cisse (48, prodded home from the edge of the six-yard box after Gouffran flicked on Janmaat’s right-wing cross)
Bookings: Williamson (10, foul), Keane (56, foul), Tiote (80, deliberate handball), Arfield (90, foul)
Referee: Phil Dowd (Stoke-on-Trent) – Didn’t miss anything major and tried to keep his cards in his pocket whenever possible 6
Entertainment: ***
BURNLEY (4-4-2):
Heaton 6; Ward 6 (Mee 66, 5), Shackell 6, Keane 6, Trippier 7; Boyd 7, Jones 6, Marney 5, Arfield 5; Barnes 6 (Jutkiewicz 85), INGS 8.
Subs (not used): Gilks (gk), Wallace, Long, Kightly, Sordell.
NEWCASTLE (4-2-3-1):
6 Elliot: Hardly moved a muscle as Boyd broke the deadlock, but made an excellent early save to deny Ings
7 Janmaat: Maintained the high levels he has been setting in recent weeks and delivered the right-wing cross that led to Cisse’s goal
3 Williamson: Couldn’t get anywhere near Ings throughout the first half and was replaced at half-time to prevent further damage
6 Dummett: Outperformed Williamson markedly before the break and looked comfortable alongside Taylor after the break
6 Haidara: His athleticism is his major asset and his defensive work helped prevent Burnley delivering too many crosses into the box
6 Tiote: A bit of a mixed bag with some poor decision-making in his own half, but his work-rate helped Newcastle back into the game
7 Abeid: Continues to look a much-improved player from a couple of years back – gradually gained control of the central area
5 Gouffran: Gets into the team because of his work-rate, but this was a night when Newcastle could have done with a bit more creativity
5 Perez: Didn’t really feature in the number ten role and was replaced at the break – needs to be breaking beyond the defence to be effective
6 Ameobi: Completely anonymous before the break, but exploded into life with some mazy dribbles after the interval
7 Cisse: Sparked into life in the second half and displayed a real desire to get ahead of his man as he fired in Newcastle’s equaliser
Subs:
7 S Taylor (for Williamson, 46): His introduction transformed Newcastle’s defensive capabilities – fared much better than the player he replaced
8 CABELLA (for Perez, 46): Changed the course of the game as he provided the link between midfield and attack that Newcastle lacked in the first half
Riviere (for Ameobi, 76)
(not used): Alnwick (gk), Streete, Anita, Armstrong.
Man Of The Match: DANNY INGS – He wasn’t as influential in the second half, but the Burnley striker ran Newcastle ragged before the break. Expect him to be one of the most talked-about transfer targets in January.
