Brighouse 1 Spennymoor 1 ( Spennymoor won 5-4 on penalties).
Spennymoor deservedly went through to the third round of the Doodson Sports League Cup with a 5-4 win on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Brighouse.
They dominated play throughout most of the game, and it was only a late equaliser that prevented Moors going through in normal time.
Spennymoor started the game well, and nearly took the lead in the opening minutes when Kieran Green’s shot was tipped over the bar, then recent signing Ian Ward burst through, but his effort was saved by Brighouse keeper Jacob Giles.
John McReady also went close with a header, while Chris Lynch, on his return to the team after injury, had an effort blocked by the keeper.
Moors stayed on top in the second half, and they took a deserved lead when Green headed the ball down for David Gibson, who fired across the keeper into the net.
Michael Roberts should have made it 2-0 when he got through on his own, but sidefooted straight at the keeper, then sub Connor Dunlavey was unlucky with another effort after Roberts set him up.
But just as it looked as if Moors would win in normal time, Ernest Boafo split the Moors defence, and Tyrone Gay tapped in with a minute left.
There’s no extra time in the league cup, and the match went straight to penalties. Moors were 3-1 up after Moors keeper David Atkinson saved, but Brighouse got back to 4-4. David Gibson missed at 4-4, but Gay missed the penalty to win the tie, and after Peter Brown made it 5-4 to Moors, Adam Wilson put his penalty over the bar.
