CALLUM ROBERTS scored twice as Newcastle United’s development team saw off Crewe Alexandra in extra-time to make it through from the last 32 of the Under-21 Premier League Cup.
The double capped a memorable week for 17-year-old forward Roberts, who was called into Newcastle’s senior squad for the first time ahead of last weekend’s Premier League game with QPR.
Roberts opened the scoring in the 40th minute against Crewe, drilling home from 12 yards after Alex Gilliead pulled the ball back from the right.
Gael Bigirimana came close to doubling Newcastle’s lead when he fired a shot against the post, but Crewe levelled with 19 minutes left when George Cooper at his near post.
That took the game into extra-time, and Roberts settled things in the 95th minute when he controlled Olivier Kemen’s left-wing cross and rounded the goalkeeper before rolling home.
Newcastle: Woodman, Olley, Gibson, Bigirimana, Gillesphey, Satka, Gilliead, Barlaser, Heardman (Kemen 83), Roberts, Vuckic.
