Former Darlington striker John Campbell is to join Oxford United having impressed while on trial with the League Two club.
Campbell, who has already scored 24 goals this season for Jarrow Roofing in the Ebac Northern League, spent last week training with Oxford, playing in a friendly match against Wolves.
Although the deal is subject to a medical to be completed on Monday, Roofing will loan the 25-year-old to the U’s until January when the transfer window opens, while an undisclosed fee has also been agreed to make the deal permanent in the New Year.
Newcastle-born Campbell used social media to say: “Want to thank Ritchie, the Jarrow manager, and all the lads and everyone involved in Jarrow.
“Just want to inform everyone I’m off for a medical on Monday and signing for Oxford. I cannot believe it. I’m over the moon, now time to bag goals for fun in League Two.
“Thanks to my family for standing by me, just shows never give up on your dream.”
Campbell, who was a trainee at Manchester City, played in the Northern League for Newcastle Benfield before being handed a chance at Darlington in January 2011, and four months later was in the starting XI as Quakers won the FA Trophy at Wembley. But within a year he had dropped back into the Northern League with West Auckland Town.
Among Campbell’s first games at Oxford will be a trip back to the North-East to play Hartlepool United.
