Spennymoor manager Jason Ainsley paid tribute to his team’s character following their excellent 1-0 win at Leek Town tonight.
Moors went to Staffordshire without three regulars, and they withstood some strong pressure and fierce tackling in the first half to earn a home tie with Chasetown next Saturday thanks to an own goal five minutes from the end.
“Tonight was all about the players rolling their sleeves up and grinding out a result,” he said.
“Everybody expected us to get beat, and some of their people were even talking about the next round when we got there – which helped my team talk.
“It wasn’t the prettiest of games, but we showed the other side of our character. The players dug in well and rewarded the fans who made the trip.”
Victory has come at a cost, as striker Liam Henderson has a swollen ankle and will be missing for Saturday’s home game with Droylsden.
Moors are at home to Chasetown in the third qualifying round next Saturday, the 27th.
