SCOTT FENWICK has been given an opportunity he won’t be giving up easily.
The striker has moved from the Northern League to the Football League, and a full-time deal at Hartlepool United.
He made his debut as a second-half substitute in Saturday’s defeat at Southend United and had two goals disallowed in the 2-1 reserve defeat at Gateshead yesterday.
Fenwick, signed from Dunston, is in line to face York City at Victoria Park on Saturday and admits: "This was a dream I always had and playing professionally is something I had always wanted to do.
"I have always been a confident lad, I had scored over 100 goals in the Northern League in the last three seasons.
"Sheffield United watched me in the FA Cup and I scored eight goals in three games, I knew I have the ability in my locker.
"There is a lot of stuff to work on but the amount of people that said 'you'll never make it' - well I'm here now.’’
Fenwick, who was booked on his debut for a shove, added: "I am a strong lad and won't back down from anything. I'm from a rough area so can handle myself.
"Centre halves hate it when you get in their head straight away, they like to know where you are.
"The caution was just a bit of handbags, he kicked out at me and I pushed him in the chest which I shouldn't have done.
"They scored within five minutes of me coming on which wasn't ideal. It was a bit of an uphill battle from there.
"I had a half-chance when it hit the kid on the chest and if I'd caught it properly it would have flown in.’’
And now the hard work starts for the striker, who could have a key role to play in the coming weeks as Pools scrap to get out of the relegation zone.
"Fitness is a massive aspect of it,’’ he admitted. "I had a heavy summer, I went away on holiday a few times and was in better shape at the end of last season.
"I have been working hard since I signed and I have a lot of work to do this week, next week and the week after that to get up to speed with some of them.
"Everyone is confident still, I am still getting to know every one. It was amazing to make my professional debut.
"Im just glad that Hartlepool has given me the opportunity.
"I will graft hard and do everything I can to make it.
