SIX North-East-raised players have been named in the England Women’s squad for their historic match against Germany at Wembley Stadium on November 23.
Lionesses’ captain Steph Houghton came up through the ranks at Sunderland as did Jill Scott, Jordan Nobbs, Lucy Bronze, Demi Stokes and Carly Telford, who are all in Mark Sampson’s squad.
The match will be played in front of a crowd of 55,000 – a record attendance for an England women’s game – and will be shown live on BBC Two.
Sampson’s side secured their place in next summer’s World Cup by completing their qualifying campaign unbeaten and in May they thrashed Sweden 4-0 in a friendly at Hartlepool United’s Victoria Park.
Eight of the Team GB side that beat Brazil at Wembley in the London Olympics feature in the squad including South Hetton’s Houghton, who scored Team GB’s goal in the 1-0 win.
