THE FA Women’s Super League returns after a four-week break this weekend with Sunderland and Durham both in action in Division Two.
Durham welcome bottom side Oxford United to New Ferens Park tomorrow (12pm), while Sunderland entertain Yeovil Town at the Hetton Centre today (12pm).
In their last outing, the Wildcats recorded their first WSL win with a 1-0 victory at London Bees after eight straight defeats, and general manager Lee Sanders admits it was frustrating not being able to follow up the result with another game.
“It will be good to get back into things,” Sanders said. “The break kind of came at a bad time for us because we got our first win, but the players are raring to go and hopefully we can get a result on Sunday.
“We had a tough start. We played the likes of Sunderland, Millwall, Reading and Doncaster early on and they’re all teams that will be battling for promotion so it was a hard start for us.
“We feel confident that we can do well when we play teams around us. We’ll give Oxford the respect they deserve and it’s not a game we will be taking lightly. There’s not a lot between the two teams but we certainly feel we can get something out of the game.”
During the break, Durham completed the signing of Middlesbrough’s Emily Scott and Sanders believes her capture is a big coup for the club.
Scott spent ten years at Leeds United before moving to Teesside where she earned a reputation for contributing goals from midfield.
Sanders said: “Emily has a wealth of experience. She spent years at Leeds United and then Middlesbrough. She was one of the top players in that league and we’re fortunate to have been able to get her in. She will bring a lot to the squad.”
Meanwhile, Sunderland will look to keep their promotion challenge going against Yeovil.
The Lady Black Cats are unbeaten in five WSL games and sit joint top of the table with Doncaster Rovers Belles.
Claire Robinson’s side suffered a scare in their last match against Watford, coming from two goals behind at half time to win 4-2, and team manager Mick Mulhern admits the Wearsiders will also have to be wary of today’s opponents.
He said: “They are currently lying in fourth position and are used to winning games having been a top side in their previous league. They have strengthened their squad and are dark horses who need to be respected. They are well organised and hard to beat so we will have to be at our best.”
Tickets for both games are available on the door.
