SUSSEX may be sick of the sight of Keaton Jennings, but even after the Durham’s opener’s century Paul Collingwood was determined to sap their morale as much as possible.
Although the captain made only five himself, he had still not declared when bad light halted play six overs before tea with Durham on 359 for six.
Tea was taken then so the declaration came during the interval with the lead on 491, which is 152 more than any side has made to win when batting fourth at Riverside.
Jennings, who signed off last season with a century at Hove, made 103 today, while Scott Borthwick fell in the 90s for the second successive match.
Following their stand of 200, both batsmen edged to James Tredwell in the slips, Borthwick going for 95 to a good ball from the deserving Steve Magoffin.
Jennings attempted to cut Lewis Hatchett four balls after completing his hundred off 215 balls by clipping the same bowler behind square for his 13th four.
Tredwell had also caught Mark Stoneman the previous evening and he took the next two wickets with his off spin as Durham tried to press on.
Ben Stokes might have been encouraged that there was still life in the pitch when he was struck on the left hand by a ball from Magoffin which bounced steeply.
Stokes was on one at the time but after brief attention from the physio he hit three fours off Hatchett in the next over on his way to 31 off 25 balls.
Trying to pull a ball from Tredwell which kept low he bottom-edged into his stumps, then Collingwood edged the spinner to slip.
Michael Richardson and Gordon Muchall put on 58 in 12 overs and both were on 37 when Richardson edged an attempted hook off Steffan Piolet to the wicketkeeper. Phil Mustard made his way to the middle just as the umpires decided to take the players off.
