THREE North-East boxers have been named in the England squad for this summer’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

With women’s boxing making its first appearance on the Games schedule, Hartlepool’s Savannah Marshall will attempt to become one of the sport’s first Commonwealth gold medallists when she competes at middleweight.

Marshall, who claimed a World Championships gold medal in 2012, will hope to improve on her performance at the 2012 Olympics in London, when she lost her opening bout despite starting as one of the favourites.

The Headland ABC fighter missed the recent European Championships through a shoulder injury, but has been handed a clean bill of health ahead of the Commonwealths, which start on July 23.

Sunderland’s Warren Baister will compete at heavyweight having narrowly missed out on a place at the London Olympics when he failed to progress through the final qualifying event.

Baister, who has been hampered by hand and foot injuries in the last two years, will hope to push his claims for a place on the Olympic team for the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Birtley’s Pat McCormack completes the North-East’s Commonwealth Games contingent, having been selected at light-welterweight.

McCormack, who won the World Junior title in 2011, cemented his Commonwealth place when he won a gold medal at the England Boxing Elite Championship finals held in Liverpool last month.

“We are fortunate to have a very good crop of talent in English boxing right now, and the men and women that have been selected should be very proud of their achievement in making it into the team and having the opportunity to represent England at the Commonwealth Games,” said Caspar Hobbs, chairman of England Boxing.

“English boxers have a very good track record at the Commonwealth Games and we are hopeful that this team can continue that success and emulate the achievements of previous England teams.”
