With Joe Kinnear having left Newcastle United for a second time on Monday night, Echo Sport have compiled a list of his five most memorable gaffes from his time at the club.
Foul-mouthed introduction (October 2008)
Unhappy at the negative portrayal of his appointment as Newcastle manager, Kinnear launched into an extraordinary tirade during his first press conference as boss.
Swearing 52 times in just five minutes, he rounded on members of the media as he attempted to defend the decision to give the players a day off on his first day in charge.
“Charles Insomnia” (January 2009)
Kinnear was never impressed with the efforts of Charles N’Zogbia, and on a number of occasions, he referred to the midfielder as “Charles Insomnia” in interviews.
It was never known whether this was unintentional or meant as a personal slight, but either way the Frenchman departed to join Aston Villa in the January transfer window.
Radio Gaga (June 2013)
Following his surprise appointment as director of football, Kinnear delivered a live radio interview in which he described Hatem Ben Afra as “Ben Afri”, Shola Ameobi as “Amamobi”, Yohan Cabaye as “Yohan Kebab” and Derek Llambias as “Derek LLambeezee”.
He also claimed to have made more than 400 appearances for Spurs (it was actually 258), signed Dean Holdsworth for £50,000 (it was actually £720,000) and won three Manager of the Year awards (he was LMA Manager of the Year once in 1994).
Trying to sign his own player (November 2013)
Sent out to scout for prospective signings, Kinnear thought he had unearthed a potential gem when he watched Birmingham City play in a Capital One Cup tie against Swansea.
After the game, Kinnear told a Birmingham official he was interested in their left-back Shane Ferguson. The only problem? Ferguson was on loan at St Andrew’s from Newcastle.
Cabaye going nowhere (January 2014)
Having been dissuaded from giving live interviews in order to prevent further embarrassment, Kinnear provided Sky Sports News with some quotes they could use on air.
“No one will be leaving Newcastle during this transfer window,” he said. Less than a fortnight later, and Cabaye joined Paris St Germain for £20m.
