MIDDLESBROUGH have agreed a £900,000 deal for Sporting Kansas forward Kei Kamara.
And in a late twist it emerged Tony Mowbray had also pulled off the signature of Norwich midfielder Jacob Butterfield, who has signed a three-year deal.
However, the transfers were not officially confirmed before the 11pm deadline as the Teessiders were still waiting for formal confirmation of the 29-year-old's international clearance.
Kamara has spent most of the day in the North-East completing a medical and having a tour of Middlesbrough's training ground and stadium.
He is understood to have signed a two-year deal with Boro and was the club's only deadline-day addition.
Born in Sierra Leone, Kamara moved to the United States as a refugee and played college soccer at California State University.
He has represented Columbus Crew, San Jose Earthquakes, Houston Dynamo and Sporting Kansas in the MLS, and also has experience of English football following a loan spell at Norwich City.
Kamara scored one goal in 11 senior appearances for the Canaries in the second half of last season.
Meanwhile, Boro officials turned down offers for both Grant Leadbitter and Rhys Williams today.
