NEW ZEALAND jockey sensation James McDonald celebrated his first winner on these shores from only his second ride when guiding Cable Bay home at Leicester.
McDonald has settled in Sydney for the last year after taking his homeland by storm when riding more than 200 winners from just 896 rides in the 2010-11 season.
The 21-year-old has already won 13 Group One races and is spending the summer at Charlie Hills’ stable. He repaid the Lambourn yard with victory on Cable Bay (7-1) in the Pytchley Maiden Stakes.
Cable Bay had shaped well on his Nottingham debut and stayed on strongly in the final furlong to score by three-quarters from Whaleweigh Station, with Hatha Hooh another nose away in third.
Juvenile Lead failed to get Sea The Stars off to a winning start as a stallion as he could only finish sixth.
The Queen’s colours were carried to victory on the 60th anniversary of her coronation by Bold Sniper (11-4) in the Norman Love Handicap.
Woodland Aria (5-4 favourite), a creditable third in the Musidora Stakes on her last run, successfully stepped down in class and trip in the Charnwood Forest Fillies’ Conditions Stakes.
Creek Falcon (3-1 favourite) bounced back from a disappointing run at Ascot to take the Peter Andre Here On August 11th Handicap.
David O’Meara’s charge justified good support to beat Exceedexpectations by two and three-quarter lengths. ‘‘He did it well but for a minute I didn’t think he was going to pick up,’’ said jockey Danny Tudhope.
