SURREY are 65 for three at lunch, 16 runs ahead and with rain forecast in mid-afternoon any result is possible.
Durham added only seven this morning before Gareth Batty completed a five-wicket haul by having Ryan Buckley lbw for seven. Durham were all out for 286 with Dale Benkenstein unbeaten on 74.
He looked mortified to be left stranded, possibly not sure about the decision as he had already witnessed Paul Collingwood and Mark Wood become the victims of questionable decisions.
However, Durham gained two lbw verdicts themselves after Callum Thorp swung one through Jason Roy’s defences to rattle the timber in the third over.
After his five-wicket haul in the first innings, Ryan Buckley was on for the tenth over and turned the ball past left-hander Rory Burns’ outside edge three times in one over.
Mark Wood bowled a lively spell and was rewarded with the wicket of Arun Harinath, making it 37 for two, at which point Vikram Solanki emerged to play very cautiously.
Burns began to whip anything slightly over-pitched by Buckley through the leg side, but he departed for 38 in Scott Borthwick’s second over just before lunch.
Borthwick looks as though he is beginning to benefit from plenty of bowling and in his first over he had an impassioned appeal for lbw against Solanki turned down.
But he was successful with the first ball of his next over, giving Durham the wicket they needed to send them into lunch feeling satisfied.
