PAUL Collingwood lost an important toss this morning and a debut wicket for Ryan Buckley might prove a mixed blessing.
Coming on for the 21st over, Buckley turned his off breaks on an Oval pitch on which Surrey appear to have backed their experienced duo of Gareth Batty and Gary Keedy to out-bowl Buckley and Scott Borthwick.
The hosts’ preference for spin saw them leave out Jade Dernbach and Chris Tremlett, and Durham would have welcomed the chance to bat against Stuart Meaker and Tim Linley, with Zander de Bruyn as the third seamer.
It would also have given Ben Stokes more time to recover, although he is in the team. After being stretchered off in the previous evening’s YB 40 match with a back injury it was a surprise when he took the field. But he hasn’t bowled and Collingwood brought himself on first change.
Surrey recovered from 28 for two to reach 103 for three at lunch, taken at 2pm because play began at noon following what should have been a late finish last night.
As expected in the absence of Gareth Breese, 19-year-old Buckley came in for his first senior appearance, while Callum Thorp returned in place of Graham Onions.
Thorp showed what an effective new ball bowler he is, having Rory Burns caught behind with his fourth ball and persuading Jason Roy to chip a catch to mid-off.
Thorp also beat left-hander Arun Harinath several times in a spell of 7-1-18-2 as he swung the ball under cloudy skies.
Vikram Solanki drove at Buckley’s third ball and edged it to third man for two. A less lavish drive two balls produced a four through the covers and in Buckley’s second over a full toss was smashed first bounce over the rope at long-on.
But after making 38 Solanki played back and turned the ball straight into the hands of Will Smith at forward short leg.
Harinath had been in 21 overs for 18 when he survived a confident lbw appeal from Mark Wood. He was on 32 at lunch with de Bruyn on eight.
