Spennymoor Town are 90 minutes away from Wembley after winning the first leg of their FA Vase semi-final yesterday, but there was disappointment for Shildon.

Moors won 3-1 at Guernsey and now hopes are very high of completing the job in the second leg next Saturday at the Brewery Field.

Steven Richardson got two of the goals, putting his team ahead in the 34th minute before the Channel Islanders equalised before half-time through Dominic Heaume.

Another Richardson goal, though, in the second period was followed by an Andrew Stephenson strike to give Jason Ainseley's side a healthy advantage in front of a huge attendance of 4,290.

Ainsley said: "I am absolutely delighted with the result. It just shows what type of squad we have here when the two subs have come on to habve immediate impacts, but we won't get carried away.

"I have reiterated how important it is that we make sure we are focused as it is only half-time and the tie is not finished yet."

Following heavy rain that had left the playing surface saturated, Guernsey had done well to get the game played having worked through the night to dry the pitch out and even used a helicopter to hover over the Footes Lane Stadium pitch.

The result leaves Spennymoor on a high, but Shildon, however, are left with a two-goal defecit after being stuck in the mud at Tunbridge Wells.

The match was in doubt during the morning and although it passed a pitch inspection, the surface was a quagmire and cut up badly with both sets of players covered in mud by the final whistle.

Two late goals gave the hosts the victory, the first by Andy Iirvine in the 78th minute and then a penalty by Jon Pilbeam after Shildon's Richard Flynn had fouled Carl Cornell.

The second leg takes place this weekend at Dean Street and Shildon boss Gary Forrest said: "It was just important that we didn't concede a third. At that stage I wanted us to take 2-0 back home and let's try to get an early goal and see what they are made of."
