HARTLEPOOL'S Jemma Lowe has been named in a strong British squad for December's World Short Course Swimming Championships in Istanbul.

Lowe, who finished sixth in the final of the 200m butterfly at this summer's Olympic Games, claimed two bronze medals at the short course worlds in Manchester in 2008.

The 22-year-old, who is now based at one of British Swimming's high-performance centres in Swansea, is one of 16 swimmers from the Olympic team to be competing in Turkey.

Olympic silver medallist Michael Jamieson will make his World Short Course debut, while world silver medallist Hannah Miley and four-time World Short Course medallist Francesca Halsall will also compete in the competition, which takes place between December 12-16.

Promising youngsters Matthew Johnson and Georgia Hohmann will make their senior international debuts as the British squad look to bounce back from a disappointing Olympics.

David McNulty, who will be the head coach for the competition, said: "Any time our swimmers are up against the best in the world means it's an important event.

"Not everyone will be tapered and some swimmers will be in the hard stage of their training cycle so they will have to swim tough, but I know our swimmers will give their best on the day.

"We will go there as a strong team and give everything we can to the meet and it will be an exciting start to the new quadrennial cycle for the team."
