Northallerton rallycross supremo Kevin Procter believes Croft Circuit will provide a "fitting end" to the MSA British Rallycross Championship this weekend.

Croft opens its doors for the final round of the Championship tomorrow, before hosting Sunday's blue riband rallycross Grand Prix.

Thousands of spectators are expected to descend on the circuit, near Darlington, to witness the climax of each championship class.

The impressive line-up of both British and European drivers includes plenty of home interest with Northallerton's Procter set to line up in the Supercar category in his 550bhp Ford Focus.

Cleasby's Rob Shield makes his car racing debut in the Suzuki Swift Junior support class, while father and daughter, Dave and Paige Bellerby and father and son, Jonny and Charlie Bean will also take to the track.

After a seven-year hiatus, the British Rallycross Championship returned to Croft last year and organisers are hoping this year's event will be an even bigger success.

Although he largely competes across Europe, Croft still holds a special place in Procter's heart and he believes having the final round at the circuit will be the perfect finale.

"I'm really looking forward to the weekend," Procter said. "It's hugely important rallycross comes to Croft as a lot of competitors - whether at Supercar level or in the junior rungs - are from the region.

"There is also a huge following for the sport in the area and with all the nerves, tension and excitement that go with any title-deciding final round, this weekend's event, particularly because it is at Croft which is a great circuit to drive and spectate at, is a fitting end to the British rallycross season."

His races this weekend will be Procter's only appearance in the UK this year and the Northallerton racer reveals he will be gunning for glory in front of home fans.

Having won at international level earlier this year when he stormed to victory in the European rallycross round in France, Procter is feeling confident ahead of the weekend's races, but admits he faces stiff competition for a place on top of the podium.

He said: "The level of competition at the sharp end is every bit as good as in Europe and Pat Doran and Julian Godfrey - one of whom will be crowned British Champion at Croft on Saturday - being the in-form men in particular. I'm sure both will be gunning for glory in Sunday's Grand Prix as well."
