I HAVE just returned home after spending one month in the stroke unit of Durham University Hospital and Bishop Auckland hospital. At 93 this was only my second hospital stay.

Contrary to the oft reported inadequacies of the NHS and lack of care to the elderly, my experience was a total revelation into the absolutely wonderful dedication of staff and nurses, day and night.

In particular I would like to give special thanks to the team in the physiotherapy department at Bishop Auckland Hospital and Tony Martin, whose caring demeanour makes him the perfect nurse.

I have nothing but praise for the NHS which I voice loud and clear to all and sundry.

Peter Barnes, Toft Hill.
