THE NORTHERN Echo carried a story about the £60m debts threatening to cripple the NHS in North Yorkshire and York (Echo, Oct 12) – but that isn’t even the cost of two jet fighters.

On page nine of the same paper there was a story about David Cameron’s plan to spend £50m marking the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.

We already hold an amnesty day in November to remember all those who have fallen in wars.

Over the past 100 years we have learned nothing and have been fighting wars almost constantly.

If we have £50m to spare, in my opinion it should be given to the NHS to help the living.

I have great respect for our Armed Forces.

However, I would be more inclined to celebrate the end of the war in Afghanistan.
