ON Tuesday (Oct 9), I was one of the parents protesting outside Darlington town hall about the threat of closure to Kids and Co nurseries in Borough Road and Northwood.

I was campaigning on behalf of my three year old daughter Lilly- May, who attends Northwood nursery.

My daughter absolutely loves nursery and it would be disastrous if Darlington Borough Council decides to close it because of spending cuts. Lilly was born with a cleft palate and she needs help with her communication skills.

The nursery staff referred Lilly to a speech therapist that provided support and development to enhance Lilly’s communication.

The nursery staff has been so supportive in educating Lilly to their best abilities.

The parents and I are very disappointed that Darlington Borough Council are undergoing a review of Kids and Co nurseries.

Targeting early years education just for the sake of saving money is morally wrong.

I do understand that the council needs to make savings but it is doing this in the wrong area.

I do firmly believe that Tuesday’s protest was successful. It showed that the children, parents, staff of Kids and Co and the trade unions stood in solidarity and shoulder to shoulder.

This is the first day of our protests and I do believe that there will be more to come.
