NEWCASTLE United and Wonga – the company behind the television advert where old ladies warble on like elderly dowagers encouraging each other to allow Wonga to charge them massive interest.
Is this the image Newcastle United wants to project? Getting the name St James’ Park back won’t compensate for the scorn coming their way.
How sad that a great football club has come to this.
Anne Simpson, Richmond.
SHIRT sponsorship must have sunk to a new low with the apparent excitement of the management at Newcastle United over the club’s £8m-a-year deal with Wonga.
I hope that fans who are considering buying a replica shirt advertising this company stop for a moment and think about the source of that £8m – vulnerable people paying a massive rate of interest for a short term loan. A loan of £300 over 30 days costs £395.
Alan Pardew seems elated about the £1.5m that will go to the club academy over the course of the four year deal.
However, in the grand scheme of things it is a drop in the ocean, equating to roughly the annual salary of one senior player.
