I WAS pleased to read that John Braine’s novel Room at the Top has recently been adapted for television (Echo, Sept 30).
I caught the repeat on BBC4 and thought it a well acted piece.
It was a far meatier version, of course, from the one I saw at the cinema in 1959, starting Laurence Harvey, Heather Sears and Simone Signoret, which, in turn, was serialised in The Daily Express.
So pleased was Braine with the book’s success that he apparently read some of the reviews 20 times.
