TONY STAINTHORP wrote of his “shock” that the BBC filmed the climate gun fight of George Gently in Durham Cathedral (HAS, Sept 20). I wonder if he would have written about his displeasure had the scene been shot in any other building of worship, such as a mosque or a synagogue?
The programme tells a story of life in the 1960s. I assume, maybe wrongly that Mr Stainthorp lived in that era?
When Jesus trashed the temple was that not also a story of the times he lived in?
The friends of the Cathedral, the Dean and Chapter, or anyone else who keep the nation’s treasures in good repair should not give you a second thought, let alone a satisfactory answer. Is Mr Stainthorp a regular attendee of the cathedral? No doubt the filming generated a substantial fee and hopefully more tourists who will put much- needed money in the cathedral’s coffers.
