I WOULD like to reply to Viv Whitaker’s letter about bees on allotments at Hurworth (HAS, Sept 18).
It is my understanding that Ms Whitaker is the main resident wanting the bees on the allotments and not in her own back garden.
Her letter is incorrect in its assertion that “everyone neighbouring the allotment site received a letter”. Both blocks of flats in Church Row certainly did not.
Perhaps letters only went to those in favour of the idea and that is why only approximately 15 people turned up to discuss the matter at Hurworth Grange.
I have asked the parish council if a risk assessment has been carried out. It has not replied.
Equally, I would like to ask the council if its insurance covers bee keeping?
If not, who is liable in the event of an attacking swarm?
The Strait Lane site is bordered on two sides by a public footpath which children use. Has anyone taken this into account?
Ms Whitaker is correct when she writes that bee stings are fatal to some, my neighbour included, but I fail to understand how not planting bee friendly plants will save anyone using the public footpath or other allotment holders.
Furthermore, who is she, or the parish council, to dictate what flowers people should plant in their own gardens.
I am sure all concerned have acted fully responsibly as she claims – by moving the threat as far away from themselves as possible.
I White, Hurworth
