I DID not think anything would top the Olympic Games but the Paralympics certainly did. I did not even bother to watch the England versus Moldova football match because of the Paralympics.

It is the first time I have watched these games and how these disabled sportsmen and women can do this is beyond me.

It was just unbelievable.

The Great Britain team did fantastically again.

My favourite moments were David Weir and Hannah Cockcroft flying round the track in their hand bikes or racing chairs – I don’t know what you call them, but they beat the opposition out of sight.

Cycling queen Sarah Storey won an incredible four gold medals, swimmer Ellie Simmonds won a couple, and seeing Jonnie Peacock (no relation) win the 100 metres in about 11 seconds with an artificial leg was amazing.

The only thing that upset me was Chancellor George Osborne presenting some of the medals – not a good idea when the current government is cutting back on disability benefits.

It would have been great if Usain Bolt had presented the gold medal to Jonnie Peacock, and some of our great Olympians, such as Mo Farah and Jess Ennis or Chris Hoy could also have presented medals to show their appreciation of these great Paralympians.

I WONDER how many of those who oppose Hugh Pender’s suggestion (HAS, Sept 10) that Olympic medallists should pay back some of the cost for the Olympics games, also support tuition fees for students?

CT Riley, Spennymoor .

HUGH Pender sunk to a new low (HAS, Sept 10). All our athletes have done Great Britain proud.

By what Mr Pender writes, he seems to hate our country.

I am sure there are lots of people who would pay for an air ticket for him to anywhere in the world.

I salute our Olympian and Paralympians.
