now regarding the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards? The producers must be going frantic.

A few years ago they would be struggling to find three suitable contenders. Now there must be a choice of at least 20, and that was before Andy Murray won the US Open. In the old days, that alone would have been enough to win the overall award.

Maybe now it should be split into different categories, with an award going to a winner from the Olympic gold medallists and another going to a Paralympian – and there are many to choose from.

What a great standard they have set, one of which everyone should be proud.

I remember some years ago Greg Rusedski winning the Sports Personality award and the best he did was runner-up.

How times have changed.
