THE proposed merger of Blackwell and Stressholme golf clubs in Darlington needs careful consideration by both clubs and the local authority.

The financial implications are a major problem for all sides.

Private golf club membership is in decline and yet Stressholme has continued to increase its attendance. Will that continue with the inevitable increase in charges for both members and day users?

A club very close to Darlington only charges £10 for a round of golf – how many people will choose to move there?

The council has a responsibility to get the best deal for tax payers and, on paper, it could have an opportunity to develop the land that will come into its ownership if the golfers agree to this proposal.

Any development must be of a high standard and in keeping with the area. There is a need for executive housing which would fit in well. However, as ward councillor for Park West, I would oppose vehemently overdevelopment and the suggestion that up to 60 properties could be built is, in my view, far too high.

This may not happen for some time but a marker needs to be made now.

What would be the worst case scenario is over-development and a golf club that could still not operate successfully resulting in loss of facilities that give pleasure to people of all ages and background.

Meaningful consultation must be carried out if this goes ahead and reassurance that this is a good deal for both council tax payers and residents of the area.

Coun Heather Scott (Con), Park West Ward, Darlington Borough Council.
